The demand for Irish passports is soaring, with applications nearing record levels. By the end of 2024, it is anticipated that over one million passports will be issued, reflecting a significant increase in demand. So far, 775,000 passports have been processed this year, indicating a robust and efficient system.

In the Republic of Ireland, counties such as Dublin, Cork, and Galway are witnessing a substantial number of applications. This trend highlights the growing need for travel documentation among Irish citizens, both for international travel and as a form of identification.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin has commended the Passport Service for its efficiency in handling the high volume of applications. The majority of adult online renewal applications are processed within two working days, showcasing the effectiveness of the online system. Currently, 90% of applicants utilize the online service, which is the fastest and most cost-effective method for obtaining a passport.

The online service also offers a passport card, which is valid for travel within the European Union, European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. This card provides a convenient option for frequent travelers who may not always need their full passport book.

Martin has encouraged citizens to use the online application system, emphasizing its speed and convenience. The online service is available 24/7, allowing applicants to complete their applications at any time. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules or those living abroad.

Despite the high demand, the Passport Service has managed to maintain smooth operations. Martin praised the staff for their hard work and dedication, which has been crucial in meeting the increased demand. The service’s ability to handle such a large volume of applications efficiently is a testament to the improvements made in recent years.

The increase in passport applications can be partly attributed to the impact of Brexit. Many Irish citizens, particularly those living in the UK, have sought to secure their Irish passports to maintain their EU citizenship and the associated travel benefits. Additionally, the rise in global mobility and the desire for international travel have contributed to the growing demand for passports.

Looking ahead, the Passport Service is expected to continue its efforts to streamline the application process and enhance its online services. The goal is to ensure that all applicants receive their passports in a timely manner, regardless of the volume of applications. The service’s commitment to efficiency and customer satisfaction remains a top priority.
