In a shocking incident in Newcastle, Co Down, a man suffered severe injuries following a brutal sword attack. The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Ballaghbeg Park area. Emergency services swiftly responded, and the victim, who sustained significant facial and arm injuries, was taken to the hospital for urgent medical treatment.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon. Detective Inspector Johnston revealed that the victim was repeatedly struck on the head during the assault, emphasizing the attack’s violent nature.

SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath condemned the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation. “Newcastle is a peaceful and tourist-driven area, and this behavior is unacceptable and not reflective of the community here,” he stated.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) continues to investigate the incident and has appealed to the public for any information that could aid their inquiry. Witnesses or individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact the PSNI or Crimestoppers.
