In a distinguished ceremony scheduled for today in Dublin, Inspector Joseph Finnegan, a seasoned member of the Sligo Garda, will be awarded the prestigious Scott Medal. This honor recognizes his heroic deeds from over two decades ago, highlighting a career marked by bravery and selfless service.

Inspector Finnegan, alongside Sergeant Kieran Flynn, displayed extraordinary courage on a fateful day in October 1997 near Lady’s Bay in Béal Deirg, County Mayo. They embarked on a perilous rescue operation in treacherous conditions to save a group trapped within a sea cave. Their swift actions and tactical expertise resulted in the successful rescue of three individuals facing imminent danger amid rising tides and rough seas.

However, the day was tinged with tragedy as the rescue team also recovered the bodies of two others who succumbed to the harsh conditions of the sea. The bravery shown by Inspector Finnegan and Sergeant Flynn during this critical incident exemplifies the risks and challenges faced by Gardai in their duty to protect and serve.

The Scott Medal, awarded for acts of bravery within the Garda Síochána, serves as a testament to the dedication and courage that Garda members must often exhibit in the line of duty. It is not merely a recognition of a single act but a celebration of the enduring spirit of all officers who face daily uncertainties with resolve and determination.

Inspector Finnegan, originally from Templeboy, has been a beacon of courage and an exemplar of the Garda’s commitment to community safety throughout his career. His actions, along with those of his colleagues, resonate deeply within the community, fostering a sense of security and trust among the public.

Today’s ceremony, therefore, not only honors Inspector Finnegan’s specific act of bravery but also shines a light on the broader commitment of the Garda Síochána to maintaining peace and ensuring public safety under often perilous conditions. It is a moment of pride for the entire community and an opportunity to reflect on the critical role that these officers play in safeguarding our society.

As the community gathers to celebrate this significant occasion, the story of that rescue in 1997 continues to inspire current and future generations of Garda officers. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who go beyond the call of duty to protect lives, regardless of the risks involved.
