Temporary Liquid Restrictions Explained

From September 1, passengers will no longer be allowed to carry liquids, aerosols, and gels in containers larger than 100ml in their cabin baggage. This includes everyday items such as water bottles, shampoos, and lotions.

Important Details on Liquid Restrictions at EU Airports

However, passengers are not required to place these 100ml containers in plastic bags or remove them from their cabin baggage during security checks. This rule aims to streamline the security process while maintaining high safety standards.

Exceptions to the Liquid Restrictions

There are two critical exceptions to these restrictions:

  1. Baby Food: Necessary for the flight duration.
  2. Medicines: Essential medications required during the flight.

Passengers may be asked to demonstrate the necessity of these items to security personnel.

Electronic Devices Unaffected

Good news for travellers with electronic devices: laptops, phones, and other electronics do not need to be removed from your cabin baggage at EU airports. This simplifies the process, allowing passengers to keep their devices stowed away during security checks.

Checking Airport-Specific Restrictions

Passengers are advised to check the specific liquid restrictions at each airport, as requirements may vary, especially when entering another airport or on a return flight. This ensures compliance with local security protocols and avoids any inconvenience.

Reason Behind the Restrictions

The European Commission has clarified that these measures are a precautionary step rather than a response to a new threat. The temporary restrictions address a technical issue with Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) at certain EU airports. These systems, which previously allowed larger liquid containers, are undergoing updates to enhance security standards.

A spokesperson for the European Commission stated, “This precautionary measure is not in response to any new threat but addresses a temporary technical issue. The Commission is collaborating closely with Member States and the European Civil Aviation Conference to develop swift technical solutions, ensuring the highest standards of safety and security in air travel.”

Ensuring Smooth Travel Experience

While these restrictions may cause some inconvenience, they are essential for maintaining the highest levels of security. Passengers are encouraged to prepare accordingly and stay informed about the latest travel guidelines.

For more information, travellers can visit the official websites of their departure airports or contact customer service for assistance.
