Ireland is experiencing a dramatic weather shift following a week of icy chaos. The country was gripped by freezing conditions that saw temperatures plunge as low as -8°C, leading to widespread disruptions caused by heavy snow. Met Éireann issued multiple cold weather warnings as communities braced for the biting chill.

However, a significant change is underway as the nation begins to thaw. Over the coming days, temperatures are forecast to climb to an unseasonable 14°C, far above the January average of 5.5°C. This milder spell is a welcome reprieve for areas that faced challenging snow, frost, and icy conditions over the past week.

Despite this respite, winter may not be over yet. Long-range weather models suggest that another cold spell could make an appearance before the end of January. Maps indicate Arctic-like conditions may return as early as Friday, January 24. However, these forecasts remain uncertain, as extended-range models are prone to changes.

Met Éireann’s outlook for the week of January 20 to January 26 highlights the possibility of frost and fog developing, underscoring the continued unpredictability of Ireland’s winter weather.

For now, here’s what Met Éireann predicts for the coming days:

  • Saturday: Morning rain and drizzle in Ulster and Leinster will clear eastwards. Elsewhere, expect dry conditions with sunny spells and isolated showers. Gradual snowmelt may cause localized flooding. Highs of 4°C to 7°C, with milder temperatures near the south and west coasts.
  • Sunday: A mostly dry start with hazy sunshine. Patchy rain in the west will spread eastward but should spare eastern areas. Breezy conditions will accompany a moderate southerly wind. Temperatures will rise, peaking at 11°C in the afternoon.
  • Monday: Mild and cloudy with scattered rain or drizzle. Highs of 11°C to 13°C.
  • Tuesday: Cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle, particularly in the north and west. Temperatures may reach a balmy 14°C, with moderate south to southwest winds.
  • Wednesday: Outbreaks of rain or drizzle in the north and west, with drier and sunnier spells in the south and east. Highs of 9°C to 11°C.

While the milder weather provides temporary relief, Ireland remains on alert for potential wintry conditions later this month.
