The national forecaster, Met Éireann, issued the warning for Cork, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow. The alert takes effect at 12:00 PM today, Thursday, and remains active until 3:00 AM on Friday morning.
Localized Flooding and Travel Disruption Met Éireann warned that affected areas could see intense spells of heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning. Motorists and commuters are urged to exercise caution, as surface flooding and spray on major routes could lead to difficult driving conditions.
This alert follows a separate Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for Clare, Kerry, and Limerick that concluded on Wednesday evening.
Regional Outlook and Weekend Forecast While the south and east brace for severe wet weather, western and north-western regions are expected to remain drier and warmer, with sunny spells and temperatures reaching between 18°C and 24°C. However, isolated thundery showers cannot be ruled out.
Overnight, rain will gradually ease in the west, with mist and fog patches developing under light westerly breezes and minimum temperatures of 13°C to 16°C.
Met Éireann noted that unsettled conditions will persist heading into the weekend, with scattered thundery showers continuing into early next week.
