Dublin Castle, Ireland: Catherine Connolly, the independent left-wing politician, has today been officially sworn in as the 10th President of Ireland (Uachtarán na hÉireann) in a ceremony held at Dublin Castle.
Her inauguration marks a significant moment in Irish political history, following her landslide victory in the recent election. The event also formally concludes the 14-year tenure of her predecessor, Michael D. Higgins.
A New Focus for the Presidency
President Connolly has outlined a distinct and progressive vision for her term, centered on several key areas:
- Social Justice and Global Issues: She has pledged to focus on core issues such as peace, neutrality, and climate change.
- Irish Language Revitalization: Connolly, who made Irish fluency a central theme of her campaign, emphasized the revitalization of Gaeilge in public life. She has indicated her wish to make Irish the working language of the presidency, a move seen as highly symbolic for the language’s status.
The new President’s agenda is expected to energize left-wing voters and promote the values she championed throughout her successful campaign.
