Co Offaly, Ireland – The countdown has officially begun for the National Ploughing Championships, an event widely regarded as Europe’s largest outdoor gathering. Set to take place from September 16-18 in Screggan, Co Offaly, the championships are expected to attract up to 300,000 visitors, offering a unique blend of traditional country life and cutting-edge agricultural technology.
The official launch mixed old and new, featuring a display of ponies and sheep alongside the latest high-tech farm machinery and tractors. This year’s event is set to be a major draw for both rural and urban communities, showcasing “the very best of Ireland,” according to NPA Managing Director Anna May McHugh.
A major highlight is expected to be the livestock section, which will host prestigious events such as the Irish Aberdeen-Angus All-Ireland Finals, the Shorthorn Calf Competition, and the Certified Irish Angus Schools Competition. The aroma of freshly baked bread will also fill the air as the Screggan bake-off hosts the final eight competitors of the National Brown Bread Baking Competition.
Beyond the fields and livestock, the event will transform into a bustling commercial hub. The “Dome” and “Hub” marquees will create the country’s largest retail pop-up, featuring everything from artisan foods and craft beers to celebrity chefs. The entire food chain, from producer to retailer, will be well-represented.
Of course, the heart of the event remains the ploughing itself. Organisers have announced a particularly strong program for the National Championships Ploughing Stakes, with over 350 competitors from across Ireland and Northern Ireland vying for the top honors.
Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon, who was the guest of honor at the launch, praised the event for its ability to “showcase all that is good about Ireland’s agricultural sector.” With just a few weeks to go, preparations are in “full swing,” as McHugh noted, transforming a green field into a one-of-a-kind celebration of innovation and enterprise.
