Dublin — A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the assault and attempted rape of a woman outside a Dublin nightclub in March 2024. The sentencing follows a trial at the Central Criminal Court earlier this year.

The man was convicted of sexual assault and attempted rape. He had also pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to the complainant on the same date prior to the commencement of the trial.

The incident occurred outside a nightclub in Dublin in March 2024, leading to immediate Garda investigation and subsequent charges. Details of the victim’s testimony and the evidence presented during the trial remain confidential to protect her identity and ensure privacy.

The judge, in delivering the sentence, emphasized the severe nature of the crimes and the devastating impact on the victim. The swift legal process, including the man’s guilty plea to the assault charge, facilitated the prosecution.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Irish law enforcement (Gardaí) and the judiciary to rigorously pursue and penalize violent and sexual offenders, ensuring justice for victims. Support services for victims of sexual assault are widely available across Ireland, offering critical assistance and counselling.
