JERUSALEM/SHARM EL SHEIKH — US President Donald Trump arrived in Israel today to a hero’s welcome in a whirlwind visit following the brokering of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Even before landing, President Trump set the tone for the visit, telling reporters on Air Force One, “The war is over,” and expressing confidence in achieving a lasting peace in the region.
Knesset Address and Hostage Release: The President’s visit coincided with the highly anticipated release of the last 20 living hostages held in Gaza. Upon addressing the Israeli Knesset, he was met with extended applause, with Speaker Amir Ohana hailing him as a “giant…who will be enshrined in the pantheon of history” and proclaiming, “The world needs more Trumps.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also lauded President Trump as the “greatest friend” Israel has ever had in the White House, praising his “indispensable help” in fulfilling the promise to bring the hostages home. The deal is also expected to see the release of approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
Focus on Peace, Despite Detail: The President’s focus remains on celebrating the peace deal, which has brought a cessation to the bombardment of Gaza. However, seasoned Middle East analysts and international leaders remain cautious, noting that the “devil is in the detail” of the long-term commitment needed for rebuilding Gaza and establishing lasting stability.
President Trump is scheduled to depart for the peace summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, where international leaders have gathered to discuss the next phase of the agreement.
