A significant security alert has been raised after cybersecurity expert Troy Hunt, of Have I Been Pwned, revealed a massive database of over 183 million compromised email addresses and passwords, including many from Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook. This data, totaling 3.5 terabytes, was reportedly compiled from ‘infostealer’ malware logs from various past incidents, not a direct hack on any major email provider’s servers.
Latest Update: Google has denied reports of a new, specific “Gmail security breach,” stating the data stems from “infostealer activity” and previously stolen credentials, not a fresh attack on their system.
Action for Users:
- Check: Immediately visit the Have I Been Pwned website and enter your email address to see if your credentials have been exposed.
- Change: If affected, promptly change your password for that email and any other sites where you used the same password (e.g., Amazon, Netflix). Â
- Secure: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or use Passkeys for maximum protection on all accounts.
