A man in his 60s has died after being struck by a car in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, in the early hours of Monday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on Lower Main Street and has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) due to an earlier interaction between the car’s driver and gardaí.

Emergency services transported the man to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he later passed away. The coroner has been notified, and a postmortem examination will be scheduled.

Another man, also in his 60s, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

Driver Arrested as Investigations Continue

The driver of the vehicle, a male in his late teens, was arrested at the scene and remains in Garda custody.

Garda forensic collision investigators have preserved the scene for technical examination, and local diversions are in place. Authorities are urging witnesses, including those with dash cam footage, to come forward.

In a statement, Gardaí confirmed that the case was referred to GSOC due to their prior interaction with the driver before the collision.

Letterkenny St Patrick’s Day Parade Cancelled

As a result of the incident, the Letterkenny St Patrick’s Day parade has been cancelled.

Organisers announced the decision on social media, stating that after consulting with An Garda Síochána and considering public safety, the event could not go ahead.

“The parade route is directly affected, making it impossible to proceed as planned,” they said, thanking those who had helped prepare for the event.
