Two people have died in separate road collisions over the August bank holiday weekend, prompting Garda appeals for witnesses to both crashes in Co Donegal and Co Carlow.
The first fatality occurred on Sunday morning, when a motorcyclist in his 40s was killed following a collision with a car at Ballyknockan, near Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow. The crash happened at around 9.30am. The motorcyclist was treated at the scene before being airlifted to the Mater hospital in Dublin, where he was later pronounced dead.
Hours later, at about 2.45pm, a second fatal collision took place at Fincashel, near Pettigo in south Co Donegal, involving a car and a 4×4 vehicle. The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman in her 20s who had been travelling as a passenger was taken to University Hospital Letterkenny with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was assessed for injuries.
The two deaths bring the total number of fatalities on Irish roads to 110 so far this year, a figure that is tracking well above the equivalent point in 2025. The rise has intensified concern among road safety authorities during a weekend traditionally associated with heavier traffic and longer journeys.
A nationwide Garda roads-policing operation remains in force until Tuesday, August 4th, featuring checkpoints and intoxicant testing across the State. To date, some 121 people have been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Enforcement figures released by gardaí underline the scale of risky driving detected during the operation. More than 3,400 drivers were caught speeding during its first four days. Among the most extreme cases, one motorist was clocked at 101km/h in a 60km/h zone at Parteen, Co Clare, while another was recorded driving 79km/h in a 50km/h zone on Ballymount Road Upper in Dublin. A further 310 drivers were detected either holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seat belt.
Gardaí have urged anyone with information about either fatal collision, including dashcam footage, to come forward and assist their investigations.
