A 15-year-old boy has died following an incident at the Donegal International Rally on Saturday afternoon, in what marks the first spectator fatality at a Motorsport Ireland event in over a decade.
The teenager, named locally as Tadhg Callaghan Carter, was among a group of spectators struck by a participating vehicle at Trentagh, near Kilmacrennan in Co. Donegal, shortly before 5pm on Saturday, 20th June 2026.
Emergency services and gardaí were alerted to the incident at Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan. Tadhg and two other injured spectators were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time after arrival. The condition of the two other injured spectators has not been officially disclosed.
Gardaí confirmed they are investigating the sudden death and have appealed to the public for assistance. “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were present at Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan on Saturday 20th June 2026, particularly those with mobile phone or dash cam footage in the area,” a garda statement read.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station at 074 916 7100 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
The local coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination is to be arranged. The road at the incident location has since been reopened.
Event organisers Motorsport Ireland and the Donegal Motor Club confirmed the remainder of the rally was cancelled following the tragedy. The Donegal International Rally is one of the most celebrated events on the Irish motorsport calendar, drawing thousands of spectators to the county each year.
Saturday’s incident is the first spectator death at a Motorsport Ireland event since 2012, a sobering milestone that is likely to prompt renewed scrutiny of spectator safety protocols at rally events across the country.
Tributes have begun to emerge locally for the teenager, as the community in Co. Donegal processes the shock of the tragedy. Investigations remain ongoing, and gardaí have said further updates will follow.
