Three gay men were attacked by a gang armed with knives while walking in Phoenix Park, Dublin. The incident was reported by Fine Gael’s Barry Ward, who was alerted by one of the victims.

Ward shared, “Yesterday, I was informed by a man who was in Phoenix Park with his friends. They were chased and ‘hunted’ by six men wielding knives.”

Fortunately, the men managed to escape unharmed. However, the incident raises serious concerns about safety in Phoenix Park. Ward questioned, “How can such attacks still happen in Ireland in 2024, when society recognizes the normality of same-sex relationships?”

The attack occurred during Pride Month, ahead of Dublin Pride on June 29. Ward emphasized the contrast between Ireland’s progress, such as the marriage equality referendum, and the ongoing resistance to acceptance within the country.

Ward also criticized the lack of Garda presence in Phoenix Park. When the victims reported the attack, they were informed there was no CCTV. He called for regular patrols in the park to ensure safety.

Acting Seanad leader Fiona O’Loughlin called the incident “shocking.” She acknowledged that while legislation has progressed, changing hearts and minds is still crucial. O’Loughlin stressed the importance of Pride in celebrating and empowering the LGBT community and supported a full debate on the matter in the Seanad.

Ward lamented the frequency of such attacks, referencing historical and recent victims of homophobic violence. He urged stronger measures to protect individuals based on their sexuality.

The Gardaí confirmed awareness of the incident but noted that no formal report had been made. They appealed to anyone with information to contact Cabra Garda Station, the Diversity Unit at the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau, or an advocacy group. Following the reports, Gardaí have engaged with LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups to address the issue.
