More than 10,000 baby soothers sold in Ireland have been urgently recalled due to a choking risk for infants and young children.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has issued a product recall for the 123 Baby Essentials Orthodontic Style Soothers (2-pack) following an EU-wide safety review.

Choking Risk Identified in Popular Baby Soothers

The CCPC warns that the affected soothers can break into small parts, which a child might place in their mouth, posing a serious choking hazard. The safety alert applies to soothers available in blue, pink, and white.

A total of 10,200 units have been sold across Ireland in various retail stores, including:

  • EuroGiant
  • Boyds Stores, Drogheda
  • Brett Supplies
  • Lklw Retails
  • Guineys
  • Tommy Joyce’s Superstores
  • CandK Star
  • Tdho Retail
  • Cappagh Pharmacy
  • Regional Foods
  • Delgany Pharmacy
  • Corduff Pharmacy Limited
  • PMG Stores
  • Snk Star and several others

Testing Failure Leads to Urgent Recall

During safety testing, the CCPC found that the soother shield broke during impact resistance tests, creating small parts that could be swallowed. As a result, the product has been classified as a serious safety risk.

What Parents Should Do Next

The CCPC urges consumers to stop using the soothers immediately and keep them out of reach of children.

In a statement, CCPC Director of Communications Grainne Griffin emphasized the severity of the risk, stating:

“There are approximately 10,200 affected soothers in Ireland that could, in the mouths of babies or small children, break into small pieces, get lodged in their throats, and cause serious harm or even death.”

Parents and guardians should compare their child’s soother with the images provided on the CCPC website (ccpc.ie) or social media pages. If the product matches the recall details, consumers should stop using it immediately and either dispose of it or return it to the retailer where it was purchased.
