Irish travellers have been urged to check the expiry dates on their passports before booking summer trips, after new figures revealed that more than half a million passports were issued in the first six months of this year.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said upwards of 500,000 passports were processed between January and June, with demand remaining strong throughout the peak travel season. Dublin recorded the highest number of any county, with more than 93,000 passports issued, followed by Cork on over 35,000 and Antrim on just under 18,000 — the third-highest figure across all 32 counties.
Around 130,000 of the passports were issued to citizens living outside the island of Ireland, underlining the global reach of the service among the Irish diaspora. On the island itself, the bulk of applications were concentrated in the country’s largest urban centres.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee thanked staff at the Passport Service for handling the surge in demand, describing the operation as “world-class” and saying it “processes applications rapidly.”
However, she stressed that a fast turnaround is no substitute for planning ahead. Ms McEntee urged the public to confirm their passport is in date well before their departure — and ideally before any flights are booked — to avoid the costly mistake of arriving at the airport with an expired document.
The Minister pointed to Passport Online as the “quickest and easiest way to apply,” noting the service is available around the clock to Irish citizens anywhere in the world. The digital system has become the default route for renewals in recent years, cutting processing times for straightforward applications.
For those caught short before imminent travel, citizens living in Ireland can still avail of the urgent appointment service at the passport offices in Dublin and Cork. Officials advise, however, that these appointments are limited and should not be relied upon as a routine alternative to renewing in good time.
With the summer holiday rush well under way, the message from the Department is simple: check now, renew early, and don’t let an out-of-date passport derail your plans.
