DONEGAL: A father and son from County Sligo have been handed prison sentences for their involvement in the theft of power tools and radiators in County Donegal.

William “Willie” McGinley (49) and his son Hugh McGinley (28), both of Alma Terrace, Finisklin, Co. Sligo, appeared before Judge John Aylmer at the Donegal Circuit Court this week. The court heard that the pair pleaded guilty to stealing a power washer and a chainsaw from a shed in Meenachallow, Glenties, in March 2022. A separate charge involving the theft of 20 radiators from a nearby property was also taken into account during sentencing.

The incident involved the intimidation of a 17-year-old boy who was at the property at the time. Judge Aylmer noted that the men had taken advantage of a minor and emphasized the need for a deterrent in such cases. Although the defendants offered €1,000 in compensation to the victims, the Judge sentenced Hugh McGinley to two years in prison and William McGinley to 20 months in prison.
