A man in his 50s has been hospitalised following an attack by an XL Bully dog at a residence in Crumlin, Dublin 12, on Friday evening.

The incident took place shortly after 7:30pm. Gardaí were called to the scene and the man was transported to St. James’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Gardaí, the dog—believed to be a family pet—has been removed from the property by the Dog Warden.

This incident comes after recent legislative changes regarding the XL Bully breed. Since February 1, 2025, it has been illegal to own an XL Bully dog without a Certificate of Exemption. Earlier, on October 1, 2024, it became illegal to import, breed, rehome, or resell the breed.

The legislation was introduced following several serious attacks involving XL Bullies in Ireland, including the tragic death of 23-year-old Nicole Morey in Limerick, who was fatally mauled by her dogs in June 2024.
