Over 100 Leaving Cert Results Withheld as Exam Cheating Detections Rise

More than 100 Leaving Certificate examination results have been withheld by the State Examinations Commission following investigations into candidate misconduct and regulations breaches.

Figures provided by the SEC confirm that results were permanently withheld from students who engaged in improper practices during the state examinations. A small number of additional results remain provisionally withheld on a without-prejudice basis pending ongoing communications between examination authorities, affected schools, and candidates.

Common Infringements and Detection Methods

While the SEC does not release specific candidate or school details to protect individual privacy, officials confirmed that results were withheld for a variety of serious infractions. The most frequent violations included:

  • Unauthorised Materials: Candidates bringing physical notes, textbooks, or hidden revision sheets into examination centers.
  • Prohibited Electronic Devices: The possession or use of unauthorized technology in examination halls, including mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, and other digital accessories, regardless of whether the devices were switched on.
  • Collusion and Copying: Cases identified by examiners during marking where candidates’ written scripts contained near-identical passages or exhibited clear evidence of unauthorized mutual assistance.
  • Coursework Irregularities: Instances involving unauthorized third-party assistance, plagiarism, or the submission of project work completed by someone other than the candidate.

Investigations and Procedural Fairness

An SEC spokesperson emphasized that upholding the integrity of state examinations is essential to ensure a level playing field for all candidates. When superintendents or examiners suspect non-compliance, formal investigations are opened.

Under statutory principles of natural justice, students are provided with copies of the evidence gathered against them, such as confiscated notes or examiner reports. Candidates and school principals are given formal opportunities to submit written responses before final determinations are made.

Range of Penalties Under State Rules

The SEC reiterated that penalties for academic dishonesty are severe. While the standard penalty involves withholding marks for an individual subject component or entire subject, more egregious violations—such as cheating across multiple papers or impersonation—can lead to the cancellation of a candidate’s entire examination portfolio or a multi-year ban from sitting state examinations.
