A tragic road incident in County Tipperary has claimed the life of an 18-year-old Leaving Certificate student after the car she was driving left the road, struck a wall, and entered the Aherlow River.
The fatal collision occurred sometime between 10pm and midnight on the night of Wednesday, April 24, at Kilaldry Bridge in the rural townland of Kilmoyler, near Cahir. Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after the young woman failed to return home to Clonmel, prompting a search effort that continued into the early hours of the morning.
According to Gardaí, it is understood that the Ford Fiesta she was driving collided with a low roadside wall before flipping into the river. A Garda sub-aqua team was deployed to the scene, where they located the vehicle submerged in the Aherlow River.
The student’s body was recovered from the car at approximately 5am on Thursday morning. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her remains were later transported to Tipperary University Hospital (TUH), where a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with tributes pouring in for the young woman, who was preparing to sit her Leaving Certificate exams this summer.
Emergency services involved in the recovery operation included Tipperary Fire and Rescue and members of the Garda Water Unit. The Ford Fiesta was removed from the water as part of the investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The L3101 local road—stretching from the Lady Gregory Pub on the N24 Cahir–Bansha Road to Kilmoyler—remains closed to facilitate a detailed technical examination by Garda forensic investigators. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes, and diversions have been put in place.
In a public appeal, Gardaí have requested that anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or who travelled in the vicinity of Kilaldry Bridge between 10pm and midnight come forward. Drivers with dashcam footage are particularly urged to assist with the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Cahir Garda Station on 052-7445630, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
The death of the teenager has sparked an outpouring of grief across Tipperary and beyond, with local schools, friends, and family mourning the devastating loss. The Department of Education has said it will provide counselling supports to classmates and teachers affected by the tragedy.
This latest incident adds to the rising concern about road safety in rural Ireland, especially for young drivers. It follows a number of similar tragic accidents involving students in recent years, underlining ongoing calls for infrastructure improvements and driver education initiatives.
