The St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church (STIOC) in Sligo marked Palm Sunday with traditional prayers and a palm procession at Ballisodare Community Center, drawing a large gathering from the local Malayalee community.

A Spiritual Commemoration in Ballisodare

The congregation gathered early Sunday morning to commemorate Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The services, which began at 9:00 AM with morning prayers, serve as the commencement of Holy Week for the Indian Orthodox diaspora in the West of Ireland.

Rev. Fr. Ninan P. Kuriakose, the parish priest, led the liturgical proceedings. The highlight of the event was the traditional procession, where faithful members carried blessed palm leaves (Kuruthola) to symbolize the olive branches used to welcome Christ.

Key Highlights of the Service:

  • Venue: Ballisodare Community Center, Sligo.
  • Lead Celebrant: Rev. Fr. Ninan P. Kuriakose.
  • Attendance: Large turnout from Sligo and surrounding regional areas.
  • Core Ritual: The blessing of the palms followed by a commemorative procession.

Community Gratitude

The STIOC Managing Committee expressed their sincere gratitude to the parish members and the wider Malayalee community in Ireland for their participation. Organizers noted that the seamless coordination of the event provided a profound spiritual experience for the Indian Orthodox families living in the Northwest.

What’s Next

This celebration sets the stage for the upcoming Easter services. As the Holy Week progresses, the community will observe several key liturgical events, including Pesaha (Maundy Thursday) and Good Friday, leading up to the Resurrection Sunday celebrations.
