Smyths Toys and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC)—Ireland’s consumer watchdog—have issued an urgent recall for seven children’s “dig” kits due to the potential presence of asbestos.

The recall follows recent testing which revealed that the sand-like material included in the excavation sets may contain trace levels of the carcinogenic mineral. While Smyths Toys stated the overall health risk is low, the retailer is withdrawing the products as a safety precaution. It is believed the asbestos entered the play sand as a naturally occurring impurity during the mining or processing of the raw material.

Affected Products

The recall includes seven specific sets sold across Ireland. Parents and guardians are urged to check for the following product codes:

  • Dino Dig Sensory Bin: 248772
  • Gold Dig Kit: 231105
  • 10pcs Dig It Out Dinosaur Eggs: 166403
  • Gem Dig Kit (12 Pack): 187539
  • Dig It Up Pirates 13 Treasure Set: 223521
  • Pocket Play Gold Treasure Chest Dig It: 242645
  • Gem Dig Kit (8 Pack): 187538

Safety and Disposal Instructions

The CCPC has advised consumers to stop using these products immediately. Because asbestos fibres pose a significant respiratory risk when disturbed, specific handling instructions have been issued:

  • Unopened Products: Place the toy in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely, and label it clearly. Store it out of reach of children.
  • Used Products: If the sand has already been played with, do not vacuum or sweep it. Use wet cloths to wipe down surfaces to prevent dust from becoming airborne.
  • Protective Gear: Wear gloves and an FFP2 face mask during cleanup. Double-bag all used sand, cloths, and protective gear.
  • Disposal: Do not dispose of these items in regular household waste. Contact your Local Authority for guidance on hazardous waste collection.

The CCPC is currently engaging with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to monitor the situation. Customers are entitled to a full refund and should contact Smyths Toys customer service at 091 355 000 or via email at moc.syotshtymsobfsctd-2946c9@ksedplehsc before disposing of the items.
